Trading agent vs trading bot vs copy trading: what's the difference?

In short

Trading bots: rules that execute

A trading bot runs a strategy you configure, such as grid trading, DCA or arbitrage. Once it is running, it opens and closes positions without asking you. Bots work well for repetitive strategies that can be written down in advance. The risks: a bot keeps following its rules after the market changes, and many bots need exchange API keys or custody of your funds.

Copy trading: someone else's decisions

Copy trading links your account to another trader and mirrors their positions in proportion. It is easy to start, but you inherit someone else's timing, leverage and risk, usually without seeing the reasoning behind a trade.

Trading agents: preparation without execution

A trading agent works like an analyst sitting next to you. It reads the market, explains what is moving and turns an idea into a ready order with the market, size and leverage filled in. Then it stops. You review, adjust and confirm. The agent speeds up everything before the decision and leaves the decision itself with you.

Not every product that says "agent" works this way. MetaMask Agent Wallet, for example, lets AI agents trade within limits you set in advance, which is closer to a bot with guardrails. When comparing products, ask one thing: can the agent place a trade without your confirmation?

How Sparkling uses an agent

Sparkling is the trading app that comes with an agent: perpetual futures on Hyperliquid, Polymarket prediction markets, tokenized US stocks from xStocks and cross-chain swaps, all from one self-custodial balance. Experienced traders can trade manually in a polished native trading interface. Or they can ask the agent: any request, typed or tapped, becomes a ready-to-sign trade, and nothing moves until the user confirms. Sparkling never holds user funds, and Turnkey keeps every account self-custodial. With 0G, the agent will move to private compute, keeping every conversation with it confidential.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sparkling a trading bot?

No. Sparkling is a trading app with an agent built in. The agent prepares trades, and every order needs your confirmation.

Is a trading agent safer than a trading bot?

It removes the risk of automated execution, because nothing happens without your confirmation. It does not remove market risk: leveraged and prediction market positions can still lose their full value.

Can an AI agent trade crypto for me?

Some products let agents trade autonomously within limits. Sparkling's agent does not: it prepares the trade, and you decide.

Trades prepared by the agent are not recommendations; every decision is made by the user. Perpetual futures, prediction markets and tokenized stocks involve substantial risk, including the loss of all funds. Some services are not available in certain jurisdictions, including the United States and the United Kingdom.
